Skyglow: a Dramatic Timelapse of Urban Night Skies that Raises Awareness about Light Pollution [VIDEO]
Driving though the night, have you ever seen the yellow glow of a city coming over the horizon? There is nothing but farmland or nature all around you, but the lights of the city create a dome that can be seen for hundreds of miles. That’s skyglow.
In the modern world, it’s rare to find a night sky undisturbed by the lights of a city or town. This is why filmmakers Gavin Heffernan and Harun Mehmedinovic teamed up to launch “Skyglow,” a project to raise awareness about light pollution.
The project aims to create a book of photography and a series of timelapse videos which will contrast views of urban areas with dark sky preserves around North America to explore the effects and dangers of light pollution.
This particular video is an experimental timelapse intended to promote the project. It features dramatic footage of city night skies, beautiful but marked by artificial light.
Heffernan and Mehmedinovic are raising funds for “Skyglow” on Kickstarter through May 9.
