Red Nose Day: John Legend Joins Sam Smith in ‘Lay Me Down’ Duet for Charity [VIDEO]
A Grammy winner and an Oscar winner walk into a recording studio. What happens next? Magic.
Sam Smith and John Legend teamed up to record a duet of Smith’s “Lay Me Down” for Comic Relief, a British charity fighting against poverty and for social justice through the power of entertainment. The song is the official single of Red Nose Day when people wear clown noses to raise funds for Comic Relief, and all proceeds from the track will also go to the charity.
The recently released video “Lay Me Down (Red Nose Day 2015)” features clips of African communities that benefit from Comic Relief programs interspersed with footage of Smith and Legend recording the song in Los Angeles.
Legend commented on the collaboration:
Sam is such a talented artist. We’ve been looking forward to working together for a while now. I’m so glad we could collaborate on such a great song and for such a great cause.
Smith and Legend will perform the song for the first and only time at the live Comic Relief – Face the Funny special at London’s Palladium on March 13.
Sam Smith also released a statement about the re-recorded song, explaining:
‘Lay Me Down’ holds a very special place in my heart… I recently visited a Comic Relief funded project in my hometown, which supports the young LGBT community in London. I’m extremely proud that my single will help raise money for projects like this and many others in the U.K. and across Africa.
