The Territory No Longer Precedes the Map: A Quilt of Aerial Footage of New York and California
This video is disorienting and entrancing at the same time. “Simulacra” stitches together photos and video footage of landscapes into dizzying scenes of California and New York. It’s an out-of-the-ordinary journey over cities and landscapes that are somehow still familiar, despite the bewildering patchwork of footage.
The photography, filming and production of “Simulacra” was the work of Theo Tagholm, an artist and motion graphics designer in London. On the video’s Vimeo page, Tagholm writes:
Today abstraction is no longer that of the map, the double, the mirror, or the concept. Simulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being, or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal. The territory no longer precedes the map, nor does it survive it.
