Black-and-White Beauties: the Majestic Penguins of the South Georgia Island [PHOTOS]
To get to South Georgia Island, you have to first fly to Chile, then to the Falkland Islands and, from there, take a five-day sea voyage across the tumultuous Southern Ocean. Photographer Mary Bransfield embarked on this brutal journey all in order to capture stunning images of the island’s penguins.
And, to hear her tell it, the voyage was well worth it.
During a 16-day expedition with nine other tourists and two biologists who study the birds, Bransfield explored the island and documented its wildlife, including the hundreds of thousands of king penguins we see on her Instagram page.
Bransfield, who lives in Chicago, traveled such a long way because of her fascination with South Georgia Island’s pure and unspoiled natural beauty. In an interview with Instagram, Bransfield explains her love for the island:
South Georgia first captured my interest through the early explorers’ stories, and more recently with conservation efforts… But it is the natural, pristine beauty that absolutely captivates me.
