The Woes of Modern Times Satirically Illustrated in Retro Drawings

What is today’s biggest problem? Is it the rising cost of healthcare? Or growing inequality? Or maybe, for some of us, it’s as simple as not getting enough Facebook likes. Well-known British illustrator John Holcroft seems to think it’s all of those and more, in his satiric illustrations of modern day woes, drawn in a retro style.

Holcroft’s illustrations, based on 1950s advertisements, use the texture and colors that reflect old-fashioned art, and perhaps simpler times all together. In his series, Holcroft depicts numerous problems we encounter today in satirical ways. For instance, he draws workers as matchsticks, highlighting the attitude of some employers that their employees are indistinguishable, cheap, and disposable. But he also shows our egotistical obsession with approval and acceptance on social media. The problems Holcraft tackles run the gamut from the personal to the societal.

Have the world’s problems gotten worse in the last 50 years?
