Anything but Stodgy: Refreshing Minimalist Book Cover Art Gives Classic Books a Modern Twist
Though classic books will never become outdated, their cover art do go out of style. In fact, cheap old-fashioned book covers might be the rule rather than the exception. Book publisher David Mautz, for one, found this to be the case, so he founded Rock Paper Books, a startup publishing company that works with independent artists and and focuses on “clean, minimalist design elements.”
The company recently launched a new project, and accompanying Kickstarter campaign, called “Rock Paper Classics,” a collection of popular classic books updated with modern and minimalist cover art. Mautz teamed up with editor Patrick Phillips and artist Mike Mahle to create the collection and launch the project. And they must be onto something: the campaign topped the $30,000 mark.
As you can see, the artwork is clean and refreshing. It honors the essence of the books while simultaneously refusing to allow those books to appear stodgy. See for yourself below how this new art rejuvenates these beloved old stories!
