Deep Exploration: Beautiful Photos of Colorful, Alien-Like Jellyfish
Some of the most alien creatures actually live on our planet, in the depths of the ocean where few dare to venture. Russian marine biologist and underwater photographer Alexander Semenov is on a three-year long, underwater expedition known as Aquatilis, in which he and his team explores the deep ocean.
Along the way, Semenov has captured magnificent photos of the marine kingdom, including these vibrant and graceful images of jellyfish. Though these creatures live on our beloved Earth, their strange shapes, translucent bodies, and mixture of colors seem otherworldly.
On the Aquatilis website, the team describes their mission and their hopes to explore the creatures of the deep:
At 300 feet beneath the surface, the ocean is dark. There are no landmarks around, you are suspended. Look hard enough and they appear: translucent creatures filled with colour. Some are as tiny as the nail on your finger, others are the size of a building. These are gelata – unstudied, mysterious and omnipresent. They are the ocean’s unseen backbone.
