Infrared Photography: Horses Recapture Their Grandeur

Google “Horse photos” and your search will come back with tens of thousands of images. They all start to look the same after a while. That’s sad, given the beauty and majesty of the animal.

Enter Greg Westfall, who experiments with infrared photography to create intriguing and dark images, like these ones below of horses.

In infrared photography the image sensor picks up infrared light, causing “in-camera effects” like false-color or black-and-white images with a dreamlike quality. The dramatic dark skies like those in Westfall’s photographs are another telltale sign of this technique.

You might argue that horses make the perfect subject for infrared photography, but don’t take my word for it. Check out this collection:
