Springtime Trapped in Winter: Flowers Frozen in Ice Resemble Exquisite Watercolor Paintings [PHOTOS]

When you think of the beauty of flowers, you think of them blooming in spring and summer and just maybe fall. You don’t expect beautiful and elegant blooms under the ice. But Japanese artist Kenji Shibata has taken the death of flowers and turned it into something colorful as well as symbolic.

In his series “Locked In Ether,” Shibata transforms these frozen flowers into what looks like high-quality watercolor paintings. The ice creates the intriguing illusion that the images were created using the various washes and edge softening techniques associated with watercolors. The flowers preserved in the ice are literally frozen in time, which simultaneously maintains their beauty and kills them. Some of the individual flowers have even thawed, adding to the tension between preservation and destruction.
